With Regina in the midst of a dangerous cold spell that has seen temperatures plummet into the mid minus 30s and wind chills well into the minus 40s, the city wants people in need to know where warming shelters can be found. “Multiple locations throughout Regina offer spaces and services to warm up over the winter season and in extreme cold temperatures,” the city says on its website. Warming shelters can be found at: 3115 5th Avenue 1510 12th Avenue 3422 5th Avenue 1801 Toronto Street 1635 11th Avenue 1725 11th Avenue 2240 13th Avenue 1314 11th Avenue 1355 Albert Street 2817 12th Avenue 2400 13th Avenue
The City of Regina also said people in need can access recreation facilities and neighbourhood centres, as well as city hall. Hours for every location vary, Carmichael Outreach has overnight space available from 7:15 p.m. until 6:45 a.m. The New Beginnings Shelter in Regina also offers sleeping accommodations 24 hours a day, but the shelter says it is at full capacity with all 55 beds occupied on Wednesday afternoon. However, the shelter says it works with other emergency facilities in Regina to make certain that no one is left out in the cold. “If an extreme weather alert has been issued and you are in need, call 306-757-0127 or find them online at moblecrisis.ca,” the city said of its support of the Mobile Crisis Helpline. Temperatures in Regina are forecast to remain much colder than average for this time of year until at least the end of the week. Tuesday night/Wednesday morning the low could reach minus 33, according to Environment Canada.
