Parts of southeastern and central Saskatchewan hosted some active weather on Thursday, as tornado and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were issued throughout the day and into the evening. In an alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) just before 6:30 p.m., a tornado warning was issued for south central Saskatchewan, including the RM of Usborne and the RM of Viscount. At that time, meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm possibly producing a tornado south of Plunkett, travelling east at 30 km/hr. As of about 5:10 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm producing a tornado over Davin, Sask., which is about 44 kilometres east of Regina. ECCC said toonie sized hail was possible, advising that it was a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.” Around 4:30 p.m., a tornado warning was issued for the RM of Browning, including Lampman and the RM of Coalfields, including Bienfait and North Portal. ECCC said meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm between Hirsch and Frobisher, which was moving southeast at 50 km/hr. The weather agency said golf ball sized hail was possible, and advised people to take cover if threatening weather approaches. Shortly after 12 p.m., a tornado watch was issued for parts of the province, with conditions favourable for severe thunderstorms to produce tornados, with heavy rain, hail up to six centimetres, and wind gusts up to 110 km/hr possible in several areas in southeast Saskatchewan. Areas under the tornado watch as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday included the RMs of Calder, Cana, Melville, Chester, Churchbridge, Elcapo, Esterhazy, Garry, Golden West, Hazelwood, Kinsgley, and Grayson, and surrounding areas. Severe thunderstorm watches were also issued for parts of the province throughout the day on Thursday, with some upgraded to severe thunderstorm warnings. Areas under a severe thunderstorm watch as of 12 p.m. included the City of Regina, the City of Saskatoon, Estevan, Weyburn, and surrounding areas. Around 4:45 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the City of Saskatoon, the RM of Corman Park, the RM of Edenwold, the RM of Great Bend, and surrounding areas. According to ECCC, conditions were favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms with the potential to produce “damaging wind gusts, damaging hail, and torrential rain.” The weather agency said a low-pressure system was moving through the southern part of the province, with thunderstorms expected to move into southwest Manitoba by early Thursday evening.
