The federal government is investing $15 million in Saskatchewan’s Turning Sun Solar Project. The announcement was made on Friday at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in Estevan by MP Terry Duguid on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson. Once constructed, Turning Sun will be a 100-MW, utility-scale facility. According to Natural Resources Canada and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, it is one of the largest solar photovoltaic projects in Saskatchewan and one of the largest renewable energy projects under construction in Canada. The project is located on the traditional territory of the Ocean Man Nakoda Nation and has 10 per cent Indigenous ownership. “Today marks a significant milestone for Ocean Man Nakoda Nation,” said Chief Ernest Standingready. “This is a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared vision for the future.” Once the facility is in operation, it will power the equivalent of 25,000 homes. “It is an honour to see one of Saskatchewan’s largest-ever solar projects, owned partially by Indigenous Peoples, begin to come to life — a testament to the ambition and execution of our government,” Duguid said. “Turning Sun will be a great asset for Saskatchewanians as we’re building a more affordable, resilient energy future across the Prairies.”
